Emails have replaced long walks.  Quick texts have replaced postcards.  Letter writing is considered an heirloom skill reserved only for those of us with time to kill.  Handwriting is loosing footing in this flurry of a world.  I’m determined to keep a stronghold. Last year we collected a bunch of vintage postcards for this project.  Amidst the many duplicates and pretty pieces, I found two that to this day are favorites in my collection.  Both Postcards were addressed to a Miss Eva Painter.  How lovely. One inscription reads: “Dear Eva: Got your card and all O.K. on Fri. Was glad […]

Last week I spent a few evenings getting acquainted with the newest volume of Kinfolk magazine.  The narrative “Undocumented Hours” was particularly curious and complex and has since inspired my to read again and again. It begins…. “The past few years have levied a strange burden of proof upon our backs, a burden to account for our hours and days, to prove to all who care to watch from the screens of their phones and computers that we are doing something worthy with our lives…” I’m guilty.  Even on this day, where I hopped my quad and rode our property, […]

I don’t know much about sports but watching the Olympics or portions of the Tour de France get me pretty excited.  The stories, the triumphs, the tribulations…all make for some excellent TV watching.  This weekend I happened to catch portions of the Tour de France.  As the newscast panned to several cyclists staying limber on stationary bikes I got to thinking…As artists, we too need to stay limber. But how?  So of course, the straightforward train of thought tells me to practice.  Staying agile in your skill is about repetition and training, right?  Sure, no one would argue.  What I […]

Front porch painting days are divine.  The last few weekends I’ve made a point to step outside and set up painting camp in the fresh air.  Every year we will fill our wraparound porch with massive hanging baskets and this year they have become inspiration for a few new patterns.  The fuchsia this year are amaze…I can’t get enough of the plump little blossoms in the most vibrant shades… I pluck a few select blooms and float in white milk glass.  Saw the pattern unfold before I even grabbed my pencil. The pups love hanging out with me as I […]

So I have a story for you and not the kind of story you might expect to hear after I’ve been at a fabulously orchestrated, glam conference in Las Vegas.  As on onlooker you may think our days are filled with all that is beautiful, creative and just plain wonderful.  I must admit, I have pinch-me moments often as my job, the way I make a living and support my family in most ways is a dream.    BUT, there are some days that try the soul.  Last Saturday was one of those days for me. A stationers worst nightmare came […]
