A Peek into the Studio – Engage!13 at the Biltmore Hand Painted Summit Stationery

Designing the painted paperie for Engage! Summits never ceases to thrill. This time around we create welcome itineraries and property maps for the 11th event held at The Biltmore in Ashville, North Carolina.  I can’t begin to express what a magical gem this property is, so steeped in history and with every turn you know that preserving this place’s history is at the forefront of every decision.  We started the Biltmore paper suite with a whimsical interpretation of the property in my signature sketchy style.

The sketch was engraved in white onto Envelopments punchy new stock named, “Lucky”.  Each was then individually hand painted with floaty watercolor mountains and painterly green grasses in the foreground.  I just love how the sheer blue watercolor pooled on this stock and try to haphazard perfection.  The light green acrylic inks with shimmery touches seemed to dance across the page.

The Engage! logo re-interpreted and made into a simple pattern to line the itinerary’s interior.

Pages inside were printed on a sassafras wood veneer, then each was brushed with a mix of cloudy blue, sheer white and green.

The map, the map, the map…love this piece so much.  First I sketched the basic elements, then layered in the architecture and fun icons, then the whole piece was watercolored…

So grateful to the team I had the joy of collaborating with to bring this suite together.  Of course I’m so proud of the work we’ve done for Rebecca and Kathryn, the summit’s founders, over the years and must say this most recent Biltmore masterpiece, was my favorite. XO
